Gel Nails vs. Acrylics for the Wedding Day

As a long time user of acrylic nails I can tell you firsthand they are not comfortable. They feel stiff and it *really* hurts if you catch them on anything.

Due to this reason alone, to the fact that it's important to be comfortable on your wedding day, I suggest having a gel manicure done up to three days before. Gel nails are more flexible, comfortable, less prone to break, and the 'soak off' options are less likely to damage your natural nails. While it's a little more expensive at the salon, I think it's more than worth it.

D.I.Y. Wedding Cake Tutorials, Guides, and Recipes

Unless you're looking to spend $1.50 to $12 a slice I suggest you consider a few Do-It-Yourself options or alternatives when it comes to your wedding cake.

If you've read this blog before, you'll know I'm a *big* fan of cupcakes. They are easier to decorate/frost, it's easy to offer multiple options, and they can be made/frozen well ahead of time.

You can order fondant and sugar decorations from multiple places including And if you are looking for more of a traditional cake you can always order it from your local grocery and decorate it yourself.

Finger Lakes State Park Weddings

If you're lacking a beautiful backyard getting hitched at a state park is a fabulous option and we're going to give you the pro's & con's, real state park weddings & information about different state parks in the finger lakes region.

The pros;

  • Pavilions often include bathrooms, tables & seating for ~$150/day.
  • No catering/alcohol restrictions minus signing a waiver.
  • Having a beautiful state park as the backdrop in your photos.
  • Family/friends from out of state can camp overnight or rent a cabin.

The cons;
  • $7 per vehicle entry fee.
  • You may not be able to reserve a specific space as your ceremony site, i.e., the waterfalls.
  • Pavilions may need to be booked one year in advance..
  • Being mindful of how loud the music is & where the speakers are pointed.
The most important thing before renting any venue is to ask lots of questions!

Mismatched Bridesmaids are Awesome

The mismatched bridesmaids look is perfect for many, many reasons - you're giving bridesmaids the option to spend within their budget, choose a flattering style &/or shade for their own unique body, and your wedding photographs will look fabulous.

In the photo below, where it looks like the bridal party is having the best time *ever*, you'll notice the flowers in their hair bring it together and the same can be done with jewelry, shoes, etc. You can see a ton of further examples via a Google image search for "mismatched bridesmaids dresses."

Awesome Real Book Themed Weddings & Inspiration

I am a bibliophile, a lover of books, & I think the idea of a book themed wedding is incredible. I found two real literary themed weddings, both with beautiful altars & decor.

The altar on the left is epic & you can see more photos from the wedding at PrettyMyParty. I really enjoyed the centerpieces as well but I wish there were some dried flowers/bud vases/tea cups on top of the books.

The 2nd features a Literary Garden theme with an altar decorated with books & flowers. See the photographs at 100LayerCake.

Below are my four favorite ways to incorporate your love of reading into your wedding day,from left to right; Printed Nails via Passion Nail Art (English Translation) (seen at BookRiot), 'I Do' Book Decor - Photo by Stephen Pappas via Style Me Pretty (seen at TresSugar), a Newspaper Bouquet via RocknRollBride (seen at BookRiot), & the Book Cake via Vanilla House Patisserie (seen at BookRiot).
